Reza
“Reza Rites,” pictured here, received a 2007 & 2009 Metcalf Diversity in the Media Award for work that appeared on her website, RezaRitesRi.com. The awards are judged by an independent panel convened by Rhode Island for Community and Justice, who sponsors and honors awardees at an annual breakfast in May. In 2007 she earned it under the “Technology for the New Millennium” category, the first year an internet category was awarded, and it was for her article “Jerusalem Women Speak, RI Woman Answers.” In 2009, she earned the recognition in the internet category again for the “Rhode 2 Africa” Interview and Podcast Series. YWCA Northern Rhode Island was also honored in 2009 for it’s publication, She Shines, a magazine for which Reza served as Guest Editor in the Spring 2009 edition, Minority Health: My Health, My Community Health.

Regarding: “Processing the AZ Shooting” a post on the National Council for Research on Women, “Real Deal Blog”

Thanks for your post about processing the shooting in Arizona.  I am a blogger, media producer and DJ that recently started a new online radio show called Sonic Watermelons on a student- and community-run station in Providence, RI.  I want to share what me and a colleague have done to process last Saturday’s shooting.

First let me say, we started Sonic Watermelons with talking about Women in Politics in our premiere episode, and we’ve returned to the topic, for instance after the presidential elections in Brazil.  We’ve made it part of our responsibility to make electoral politics more open and friendly to girls and women, and as selfish as this may sound, Saturday’s attack was also an attack on our work too.

Below is how my partner and I processed the weekend’s event and how we used our small, independent media space to address it and other recent issues.

RADIO TOWN HALL MEETING
Examining Opposition without Alienation
Sonic Watermelons, Monday Jan 10, 2011

PROVIDENCE, RI – An assassination attempt on a woman in office in a polarized state, a polarizing issue that just got stickier in Rhode Island (the nation’s smallest state), and the disenfranchisement of millions of American citizens, including in our nation’s capital.  We’ve got to talk (and listen).

Tune in to the archive of the “Town Hall Meeting” on Brown Student and Community Radio, January 10, 2011 on “Sonic Watermelons with Venus Sings and Isis Storm.”  A weekly program that combines news and interviews with hip hop, soul, and global grooves, the January 10 edition of Sonic Watermelons included a special set of guests: Washington DC and Maryland-based “emancipatory” journalist, college professor and hip hop educator, Jared Ball; Cheryl Contee aka “Jill Tubman,” co-founder of Jack & Jill Politics, a blog offering a black bourgeoisie perspective on U.S. politics; Dr. Toby Ayers of Rhode Island for Community and Justice, a non-profit organization that works to unify diverse communities in RI; and Providence community leader and Native American “culturalist,” Raymond Watson.

Or goal was to dig deeper into the recent news, yet focus on what we can all do to better practice opposition with alienation.

Venus Sings and Isis Storm Cover Native American Health Issues and Traditional Music on Sonic Watermelons on BSR

Updated Wednesday, October 13, 2010, 1:00 PM (EST)

PROVIDENCE, RI – On Monday, October 11, many around the country were commemorating the explorations and accomplishments of Christopher Columbus, for it was the annual federal holiday honoring his adventures of 1492. Yet not everyone sees reason to celebrate this “discoverer” of the New World. Here on IsisStorm.com, and in partnership with UrbanHealthWatch.net, we decided to take a look at another angle of the Columbus legacy: Issues and Disparities in Native American Health. We also showcased local and international music to keep folks thinking.

One of the experts we turned to was Donald Warne, M.D., who, according to the health documentary, Unnatural Causes, comes from “a long line of Oglala Lakota traditional healers,” and was “trained in medicine at Stanford and public health at Harvard and has studied diabetes education and minority health policy.” We also turned to the topic of sexual violence against Native American women, a topic that’s been covered in great detail by the activist and educator, Julianne Jennings, and by the nonprofit/NGO, Amnesty International (and Amnesty USA)  Special thanks are also due to Corey Taylor / DJ Blade Mon, the videographer/producer behind two of the traditional drumming videos we played, and the selector/curator of several of the reggae tunes we shared as well.

Storm to Storm: Reza Rites/Venus Sings Speaks with Michelle Cruz and 5th Elament

Updated Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 2:30 PM (EST)

PROVIDENCE, RI – Both of these posts come from another blog I keep, VenusSings.com, but I know both posts would be of great interest here since they’re both about “Storm to Storm” pieces I’ve done recently.  Below I’ll provide you with an excerpt of the article followed by a link to the full piece and a link to the corresponding audio podcast.  Please enjoy!

Thru the Muck to Venus Sings Radio: A 5th Elament and Venus Sings Podcast

(posted today, September 22, 2010)

KINGSTON, RI – Where are the women in hip hop? It is a common question and refrain at live hip hop shows, locally and globally. But more varied has been the cause for this absence and the response to it.

Women viewed as non-players in the rap game is common, as is the emulation of women who have taken on hypersexual caricatures to maintain attention – sometimes over artistic development and advancement. Women who have devoted significant time to showing off their skills in wordplay, metaphors, and imagery – they are often mocked for being manly or unfeminine, and, even when women are included, concert promoters, executives, and even some attendees, underestimate and undervalue the selling power of such acts.

That is the scene you have to be aware of if you choose to come out as a woman in hip hop, especially as a “femcee.” By and by, though, these challenges have not stopped women from stepping up and demanding space in the game. One woman doing this is Kalyana Champlain, aka 5th Elament – my co-founder and partner in Isis Storm, my colleague at WRIU, my on-stage performance leader, and my friend of many years.

Playlist Mania – Michelle Cruz on Venus Sings Radio, July 24, 2010: The Podcast and the Preview

(originally posted August 22, 2010)
by Reza Corinne Clifton
(Venus Sings / DJ Reza Wreckage / Reza Rites)

KINGSTON, RI – On Saturday, July 24, 2010, Venus Sings Radio on WRIU was a very special and sultry edition. That is because I brought in Michelle Cruz, a singer, songwriter and guitar-player from Pawtucket, RI who is adored and admired by fans locally as well as along the east coast for intensely intimate and “surreal” musical blends and live performances. Click here to listen to or download a podcast with musical and conversational highlights from the show.

I’ve followed and worked with Cruz for several years, through projects including Rhode 2 Africa and Isis Storm, and as a former visitor to Venus Sings Radio. It’s an easy choice, really; she has consistently released and promoted singles, has an interesting personal past as the only American-born member of her otherwise Cape Verdean household, and she regularly garners recognition, like recently being named a finalist in a contest tied to the Lilith Fair nationally-touring concert series and having a song named number one jazz song of the month on thesixtyone.com. Even with all this, Cruz had another reason to join me: cataloging her years of songwriting and responding to clamoring cries for a central place to find her music, Cruz is working on a full-length album.

Besides the online frequency, BSR broadcasts as WELH Providence, 88.1 FM, every night from 9 PM – 5 AM. But my job on Monday the 13th was to premiere a show that will be the audio stomping ground for Isis Storm, and what better way to do this than by not only playing poetry and music, but taking on the big topic of women in politics and women in RI. I did this by talking with Women’s Fund of RI (WFRI) Executive Director, Marcia Cone, PhD.

Hear a podcast of the interview it in its entirety by clicking here.

During our conversation, which was taped just earlier that day in her Providence office, Cone cited a trend in funding cuts that traditionally support women and girls – often what is contrary to what many political figures cite. She also talked about the challenges of getting women to run for office, numbers that have seen few improvements even looking at yesterday’s primary elections.

On the other hand, Cone did take the time to celebrate the work WFRI has accomplished, for instance through it’s grant-making to organizations and individuals who are making a difference for girls and women in RI. She says the organization will be celebrating a decade of work in the coming months, but in the meantime, she encourages women and community members who are disengaged to talk to each other, investigate issues that matter personally, and get involved.

Updated Thursday, September 9, 2010, 5:15 PM (EST)

PROVIDENCE, RI – We told you Isis Storm was coming at you… take a look at our upcoming performances, workshops, and even a political debate being moderated in part by me, Reza Rites.  What else is new?  Published author and cultural anthropologist, Indigo Bethea has a performance coming up on Friday, September 10 at a cafe in West Warwick.  In addition, Isis Storm co-founder, Kal Champlain, is moving along with her album release as is singer-songwriter Michelle Cruz, both of whom will preview works on Thursday, September 16.

Speaking of the 16th, besides a chance to hear singles off of Cruz and Champlain’s upcoming albums, the Brooklyn Coffee Tea House show will serve as the first showcase of a partnership between Isis Storm and Partners in Learning About AIDS (PL-AIDS), a recently formed non-profit organization in Providence, RI that aims to educate and treat high risk HIV populations.  As representatives of and advocates for women of color, and with a crew that includes health journalists, we’ve wholeheartedly embraced our need to speak up when, as some statistics show, “Black and Latina women make up 82% of all women with AIDS in the U.S.”

Yes we’ve got work to do, but what’s a more fun way to do it than “through the power of art and writing.”  Hope you’ll join us!

Hi Friends,
I’ve got good news and bad news to share about Isis Storm, but don’t worry, because the bad is certainly not awful.  Besides, below is only a sample of the good news we’re sharing.  We’ve got new community partnerships in the works, educational workshops being scheduled as we speak, music shows and events being planned outside of RI, and a new Venus Sings/Isis Storm radio show coming soon to www.BSRlive.com.  With all of this, what more could be happening?

Well, not just one, but TWO (count them one, TWO) Isis Storm artists are releasing new albums:  singer/songwriter/guitar player, Michelle Cruz; and Isis Storm co-founder, recent Master Degree recipient, educator, poet, and hip hop “femcee,” Kalyana Champlain/5th Elament.  Click here to read about, and hear a podcast with, Michelle Cruz and I talking in July on WRIU about her release.  And to hear more about 5th?  A podcast of her special visit in August to Venus Sings Radio is coming soon, but until then, check her out at www.5thelament.com, where you can hear tracks from her album and learn about additional shows, promotional giveaways and ways to support its release.  And to learn more about Michelle Cruz, visit www.MichelleCruz.com.

Thanks for your support, and be in touch (www.IsisStorm.com, beginthestorm@gmail.com) if we can play for you, work with you, or connect with you.

Sunshine and laughter,
Reza Rites / Venus Sings / DJ Reza Wreckage
